Indian passport services generally apply to Indian citizens. The correct process depends on the applicant’s status, circumstances and consular jurisdiction.

Passport Renewal, Reissue & Documentation

Indian passport services are available to eligible Indian citizens. For applicants residing in the United States, the applicable Indian Embassy or Consulate and its designated service provider set the submission requirements. A passport renewal is generally handled through a passport reissue application.

When might you need a passport reissue?

• Passport expiry or approaching expiry.
• Exhausted passport pages.
• Changes or corrections to personal particulars, such as address or name, where supported by the required documents.
• Lost, stolen or damaged passports, which may involve additional evidence and different processing rules.
• Passport reissue for minors, with applicable parent or guardian documentation.

Typical documents to prepare

• Existing Indian passport and relevant photocopies, if available.
• Proof of lawful U.S. status and any residence or address evidence required for your jurisdiction.
• Recent photographs and the completed application in the required format.
• Supporting records for changes in name, address, birth details or other particulars, when applicable.
• For minors, applicable parental passports, consent or declaration documents.

How the process generally works

1. Determine the correct Indian consular jurisdiction and application category.
2. Complete the prescribed passport application and follow the designated service provider’s instructions.
3. Gather supporting documents and pay applicable government and provider fees.
4. Submit through the officially permitted mail or in-person channel and monitor updates.

Normal vs. Tatkaal processing

Where offered, Tatkaal is an expedited reissue category with eligibility restrictions. For example, the San Francisco Consulate excludes certain lost/damaged passport and major personal-detail change cases from Tatkaal. Expedited service is not available for every applicant; official eligibility and processing information must be checked before applying.
