Digital convenience
A downloadable digital representation of the particulars in your OCI record. Downloading is free of government charge and limited to five times per day.
Generate your e-OCI
Sign in to the official OCI portal using your registered account, open the e-OCI tab, choose “Generate e-OCI Card,” and save the resulting file.

If passport or personal particulars need updating, complete the applicable OCI Miscellaneous Service first. An inaccessible or unregistered email may require an email ID update.

OCI Eligibility, Benefits & Application Guidance
Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) is a special status for qualifying foreign nationals. OCI is not Indian citizenship or an Indian passport. Applicants must hold a valid foreign passport. The official Ministry of Home Affairs portal governs eligibility and applications.
Who may qualify?
- Former Indian citizens, or certain foreign nationals eligible for Indian citizenship on 26 January 1950, and qualifying descendants up to great-grandchildren.
- Eligible minor children, including children with at least one Indian-citizen parent.
- Foreign-origin spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders where the marriage has been registered and subsisted continuously for at least two years, subject to security clearance.
Important restriction: People who, or whose parents, grandparents or great-grandparents, are or were citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh or another notified country are not eligible under the published OCI criteria. Individual circumstances and documentary evidence matter.
Key OCI benefits and limitations
- Multiple-entry lifelong visa to India, subject to special permissions for certain activities and restricted areas.
- Exemption from ordinary FRRO/FRO registration for stays in India, subject to applicable address and occupation reporting requirements.
- Specified benefits relating to certain property transactions and professional or educational activities, subject to law.
- OCI holders cannot vote in Indian elections, hold certain public offices, or purchase agricultural land, farmhouses or plantation property.
